The Magical Quilt

Chapter One – The Old Tunnel that was Secret

Once in a small house in Wiltshire, the doors were slammed. Bang! Crash! Cluster! Cling! The whole household was turned upside down. The thing was that the great river which was known as the magical river, for there was an underground tunnel in the depths of the earth and because of the river’s magic, the whole village had been flooded that very night. “If only the angry magical spirits of the river would die!” cried a small girl whose name was Margarette turning to her elder sister Shally. And after a minute or two, both of them were puffing and panting.

“Are we far away from the river?” asked Margarette to Shally. “Yes, dear” answered Shally. “In fact, it is pretty safe to camp here for the night.” They hunted for wild fruits and ate them. They were ready to set off again in the morning.

Chapter Two – Where can Margarette be?

During their journey, something horrible happened. And it began when the Sun was shining, birds were hopping and girls had become quite used to their life in the jungle. “Where the north wind meets the sea, there’s a river full of memory ……..” sang Shally arranging wildflowers in her basket. There was Margarette bathing in an icy cold stream. Suddenly a terrific growl startled the girls. Shally, however, didn’t show interest to go and see what the growl was, but Margarette didn’t wait to explore.

Chapter Three – Only Shally Left

Meanwhile, Shally hadn’t noticed that Margarette had quietly slipped into the forest in search of the growl. She had an adventure of her own. Shally realised her sister wasn’t there after some hours and thought maybe she went into the forest herself. So she didn’t think she will be lost and went on with her work.

She suddenly heard footsteps approaching her. Out of the shadows came a very exciting Margarate carrying a big roll of old rusty looking paper. “What’s up sis?” asked Shally putting her basket down. Look at the map Shally, Please. They studied the map carefully. Shally shouted in an elated voice, “If we found the magical quilt, it would be great.” So off they set again.

Chapter Four – The Ghost Family

Walking slowly down a path no one made, was Shally and Margarette. “The map says we will reach a tree with a knot on its trunk now,” Margarette said. “There, that should be it”, Shally replied, pointing to a tree. Sure enough, there was a bark with a large knot on the place where the branches split. “Tap it”, said Margarette. Shally did. “A house will appear”, Margarette said. Seconds later, a cottage appeared. “Knock” Shally ordered. Margarette knocked on the door. An old vampire answered. Before Margarette could scream, the vampire vanished. Inside, the two girls heard the vampire talking to someone “the taller one looked tasty ma’am”. The girls froze.

Chapter Five – The Quilt at Last

There was only one thing for it. Run. “Wait”, said Shally. “The Magical Quilt was supposed to be under the tree stump.” Margarette looked around, and she found a white quilt beside the stump. “Climb on it” cried Shally. “Look! ‘Ascende in me’ – that’s climb on me in Latin!” The girls climbed on the quilt. It rose in the air and flew, taking them to visit far away lands. “We did it!” yelled Shally. And so they did.
